Day 23 of 25 Handmade Gifts to Give

Sorry about the sudden break in Handmade Gift Ideas. I had planned to get posts ready to go up last week, but time just kept getting away from me.

Back to catch up for the next 3 days.

Makes me think of Atari and my childhood. From The Art of Amy C Nelson

And 2 hats from Rak J Patterns

Adorable Rainbow Sock Monkey Hat!

I know Thanksgiving is over, but this hat is just too cute not to show.

She has some really neat things in her shop.

Make it Monday

New pictures of the Under the Cabinet Jar opener are posted on my Pink Owl site.

This week I'm working on:
  • December Daily book. Making one for me and for each of the kids.
  • Monogram Coaster Clipboard desk set(hard to explain, but really neat)
  • Dress for Audrey
  • Pillowcase for Dart
  • Cards, cards, cards, and more cards
  • Banners
  • 34 before 35 book(look for an update on 33 before 34 later this week)
I'm sure I'll find some more things to add to my list, but I'm trying really hard to get done what I put on my Make it Monday list.

Snow Banner I made last week.

Under the Cabinet Jar Opener

While I was at my mom's this weekend I decided to take some better pictures of the under the cabinet jar opener. I don't have one hanging up at my house because we rent and our landlords don't want holes put in the cabinets.

Here are pictures that will give you a better idea of how this thing looks and works.

How it looks mounted under your cabinet.

Another view of it mounted.

Opening a jar of salsa.

2 liter bottle of pop.

View from under neath. Not sure you would ever look at it like this, but just an idea of how it goes up.

Back to

work tomorrow. Will be back to finish the 25 gift ideas. Also better pictures of the under the cabinet jar opener. Working on lots of projects this week and can't wait to share them. Hard to believe December is just around the corner.

Back to....

work, school, routine! Back tomorrow with lots of stuff including make it monday, plans for my December Daily album, Thanksgiving memories and new pictures of the under the cabinet jar opener.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

Golf Balls

I know it's a strange title for a post, but read the story and you will understand. Found this on Project You
If you have never checked out Project You, please do, it's an inspiring, amazing blog. I wish I could remember who turned me on to it so I could thank them. The following story is a reminder to always remember your golf balls, something I am working hard to be much better about.

Golf Balls
A professor stood before his philosophy  class
and  had some items in front of him.

When the class began, wordlessly,
he  picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
and start to fill it with  golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and  poured
it into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.
He then asked the students again
if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand
and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded
With an unanimous  'yes.'

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the  table
and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively
filling the empty space between the sand.
The students laughed.

'Now,' said the  professor, as the laughter subsided,
'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things - God,  family,
children, health, friends, and favorite passions
Things  that if everything else was lost
and  only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, house, and car.

The sand is everything else --
The small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar  first,' he continued,
'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf  balls.
The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy  on the small stuff,
You will never have room for the things that  are
important to you.

So...
Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play with your children.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner.
There will always be time
to clean the house and fix the dripping tap.
'Take care of the golf balls first --
The things that really  matter.
Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'
One of the students raised her hand
and inquired what the coffee represented.
The  professor smiled.
'I'm glad you asked'.
It just goes to show you that  no matter how full your life may seem,
there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with those who love you, whom you love ... and with those you can make a difference.'   Found on Project You.

Day 22 of 25 Handmade Gifts to Give.

For today's gifts I'm featuring the entire shop. Elise is one of those people that I follow her blog, twitter stuff and her etsy shop. I love her stuff. Simple and amazing. Her shop Elisejoy is full of amazing paper stuff.

I love the cover of this book. Would be neat for so many events.

I love this quote and would love to have this hanging where I can see it as a daily reminder.

...

In case you read this in Google Reader or email I made some changes to the blog tonight and would love for you to check them out. Still trying to decide on the layout, but I do like my new header. Working on a new header for my Pink Owl Blog and for my Etsy site.

7 on Sunday

1. Getting very excited for Black Friday. Working on my lists. My mom and I go every year and I not only love the deals, but getting to spend that time with her.

2. It is unseasonably warm here. In fact as I type this at 9:32pm we have the window in the living room open. I'm starting to get a bit chilly, but it's that good chilly. I know come Friday when my mom and I are shopping we will be freezing, it's gonna happen.

3. Had to buy Dart dress pants for Tuesday. They have awards assemblies at their school and he has a speaking role in the assembly as 3rd grade is playing the leadership role. At their school they are part of "The Leader in Me" program, based on "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People". Each grade plays a role in the assemblies. They started last year and it is amazing the transformation in the kids. Because he has a speaking role he has to dress like a leader as well. He does NOT wear dress pants or even jeans. I cannot believe the price for kids pants, got his on sale for $12.00 reg price was $32.00 for a pair of pants for a 9 year old boy. There is no way I would pay $32.00 for a pair of pants for him. Audrey is also receiving an award, but getting a nice dress for her to wear is not a problem, she has a ton in the closet.

4. Spent the weekend working on a couple of banners, a card order, and another good size order. Will show pictures when I'm done.

5. I have an addiction to photoshop elements. I LOVE editing pictures and just playing with digital stuff. In the new year I plan to do a lot more digital stuff.

6. Was a good sports weekend. Got to watch my Chiefs not only play, but win. Mizzou won and Nebraska lost(and I'm pretty sure Bo is on the naughty list after his actions). And not sports related, but a win for Columbia, Shakespeare's Pizza was voted as the Best College Hangout in Best Bites on Good Morning America. If you are ever in Columbia, Shakespeare's is a MUST!

7. Starting to work on my 34 before 35 list. Thinking of making a mini book to track it this year. I think my goals and ideas for the year are going to be so different than ever before in my life. Also starting to think about my one little word for the year, inspired by Ali Edwards

+1. Working on my December Daily book, also inspired by Ali Edwards. This will be the first year I've done it, but I'm excited about it. Mapped it out last night and this morning.

Day 21 of 25 Handmade Gifts to Give

Today's gift ideas are jewelry. I'm not a big jewelry wearer, I do love funky rings though. As for earrings and necklaces, but when it comes to bracelets I'm really picky. I don't like really chunky ones, too hard to work with them. I have a few bracelets that are more charm type that I love and wear.

I found this necklace on etsy in Chain Link's shop and love it.

This is totally a ring I would wear! Although I think first I'd have to keep Audrey away from it. From McKinley Designs

Love this pendant. Would love one for each kid with their initial. From E. Ria Designs

If you have a jewelry lover on your list check etsy out. There are tons of amazing designs for every jewelry lover.

Soup on Sunday

Our weather is not suitable for soup today though. I want some of that winter weather other parts of the country are experiencing. Yes, I'm crazy, but I love winter and snow.

Today's soup is one I made a couple weeks ago and it was so good.

Tomato Corn Chowder
4 bacon strips, diced
1 large onion, chopped
2 cans(15 1/4oz each) whole kernel corn, undrained
2 cans(14 1/2oz each) diced tomatoes, undrained
4 medium potatoes, peeled and diced

In a large saucepan, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove to paper towels; drain, reserving 1tbs drippings. In the drippings saute onion until tender.

Add the corn, tomatoes, and potatoes. Cook over medium heat for 25-30 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Sprinkle with bacon.

I was able to find family size cans of corn and bought 2 of those and used both so ours was a little thinner, would probably drain some off next time. I also added some shredded cheese and sour cream to my bowl the next day. Super easy, especially since you cook the potatoes right in with the rest of the stuff. One pot to make it all in is my kind of cleaning.

Random Info about Me

Just some random tidbits about me.

  • I love and am highly addicted to Twitter I have a hard time not checking it 100 times a day.
  • I'm starting to work on my 34 before 35 list. I need to review my 33 before 34 list and see what I actually accomplished, what can be added to my new list and what I have no interest in anymore.
  • I recently discovered Mind Mapping and feel like it is changing my life. I will be doing a post about this later on.
  • I am getting very excited for Black Friday. My mom and I spend the day together shopping and it is one of my favorite days of the year.
  • I got new fleece pj pants the other day and Dart is extremely jealous of me. He keeps reaching over and petting my pants. Guess what's on my list for him for Christmas.
  • I've discovered lately that while I love chocolate, I am a salty kind of girl.
  • I am hoping Shakespeare's Pizza wins the Best College Hangout on GMA. Love Shake's.
  • I am so excited that Nebraska lost tonight. Holy cow was Bo just a wee bit upset tonight? Wow, his actions prompted Audrey to say "He would be in Red by now and going to see the principal." I can't wait to tell her teacher.
Got lots done on my to do list today. Lots to get done before we head out of town next week. Lots of orders I have to get done. Will show you what I'm working on. Lots of mind mapping to get them figured out. Seriously changing how I work. Can't wait to have lots more info on it to share with you.

Day 20 of Handmade Gifts to Give

After day 19's post about cookies I figure in order to do all that amazing baking that happens at the Holidays, one must have a cute apron to go with it, so that's the ideas for today.

I love the oven mitt pockets. From Delaney's Closet.

How cute is that?!! From Pig and Company
She has an adorable owl apron.

How cute would that be for a little baker in your life? From GranmaShirley

Back tomorrow with more gift ideas.

Day 19 of 25 Handmade Gifts to Give

So for the last few days of the gifts to give posts I'm going to feature things I find that I love.

I don't know how I came across this shop, but OMG! her stuff is AMAZING. Yes I know that's a lot of caps in one sentence, but look at her stuff. Batches is the name of the shop.

I love that she has pink owl cookies.

More cute cookies. This time from KindredSpiritSweets

How cute are those doggies?

I love these cookies from TSCookies

There are some really cute school bus ones in the same shop.

Being a former tennis player I would have loved these when I was playing(well I'd still love them). From Ruthie's Cookies

She has some that I know my brother would love to have. She has some running shoes and running jersey's.

Didn't mean for this idea list to be all about cookies, but once I found one they just kept appearing.

Just listed

Just listed this item in my Etsy store. Snow Banner/Garland

Listed these a couple of days ago and working on more.

This Blog

I know I've posted before about not being sure what I want this blog to be and where I want to go with it. I think for now at least I've figured it out. It may be an ongoing thing, but I know part of my problem was my own analness(I'm sure I made up that word). I decided that in order to go in the direction I want to with this blog I needed to change the title of the blog. I decided to change it to Living a Passionate Life, because by doing that I can blog about whatever I want, as long as I'm passionate about it and probably even a few things I'm not, but hey sometimes laundry and vacuum have to be done even if you are NOT passionate about it.

I'm going to open up and be me, because you know what it's something I have always struggled with. I'm determined to make my 34th year the best ever. I have big goals and plans and I'm not going to let my insecurities and worry about not being myself because someone or someones may not like that. I have those kinds of people in my life, some I can get rid of, but some I can't. And maybe with some of them it is me thinking I can't be my true self around them, not really them.  And I'd like to think that with some of them it's because they wish they could feel more comfortable being themselves around people and not what they think they need to be.

Self Confidence has always been an issue for me(I know I've blogged about that before). I have always wished I was one of those people who believed in themselves so much that they really didn't care what others think. I think a small part of most people care on some level what others think of them, we all want people to love us and care about us. I want to be proud of who I am and not get so hung up on being who I think others want me to be. I want to be proud that I'm creative. I get so tired of people thinking it's a bad thing. I have someone very close to me in my life, that I can't really easily get rid of that at times thinks it's a great thing, but others loves and brags about it. It's hard to be around that person because I never know what mood they are going to be in and what side of them I will encounter. You know what I'm tired of it. I accept them for who they are and they need to learn to do the same and not just when it strikes their fancy or when it will benefit them.

So with this blog I'm going to blog about whatever strikes my fancy. I will blog about what I'm working on, what the kids are up to, when I'm upset, when I'm happy when I'm sick of the floor looking like it does from all the leaves that come in our house and so much more. I hope you will join me on this journey.

Some of my problem was also coming from having another blog for my Pink Owl stuff. I was having a hard time deciding what I wanted to post here and what I wanted to leave for there. So I think I have that figured out as well. My plan is to use that for finished items only. Maybe once in a while I'll throw in other posts, like right now that is where I'm posting all my Handmade Gifts to Give ideas. It will be more for the "business" type stuff. I will show projects here as well.

There has been a lot of this going on in our house lately. Lots of Littlest Pet Shop and drawing and puzzle putting together.

Day 18 of 25 Handmade Gifts to Give

First of all I want to say Happy Birthday to my mom. She is the best grandma to my kids and an amazing mom and friend to me. For a long time it was just the 2 of us after my dad died and I know I wasn't always the easiest child, but she has always stuck by me and been there for me.

Today's idea is one of the things at the holiday's that really seems to stress people out more than even shopping...cards. I love getting handmade cards, but I also really love photo cards, so I'm going to feature both. I know photo cards aren't technically "handmade", but the ones featured on etsy are at least designed by individuals instead of mass produced. I will feature both don't worry.

First up digitally designed cards:

Found in the shop Starlite

I love the trees on this card. Found in LNZart

I love the non-traditional feel to this card. Found in Announcing In Style

Now for non-digital cards.

I love polkadots and these cards are simply adorable. I love the polka dots and the simplicity of these cards. Found in of course Polkadot Shop

Love the owl couple. Found in 1313 Designs

Sorry for the bad picture here, but this is a set of Christmas cards I made for a friend. I love the simplicity of them. Have an order for 25 more. MUST GET BUSY!

If you have anything you'd like me to feature please leave me a comment. Only 6 more days left, I can't believe it.

Day 17 of 25 Handmade Gifts to Give

Day 17 brings one of my absolute favorite things about the Holidays...Nativity Scenes. I don't know what it is about them, but I have a major love for different Nativity scenes and I seem to like the non traditional looking ones. The only one I really own right now is the Fisher Price Nativity Scene and I LOVE it. It is traditional looking, but there is something so sweet about it. I think part of it is the look on my kids' faces each year when we get it out. Even Dart who is getting older still has that little shimmer in his eyes every year when we pull it out.

Some of my favorites on Etsy:

From Meadow Tea

How adorable is that? So many ways you could display it.

This is so different and can't be displayed in the house really, but still so cute for a little girl. Sweetstitchedthings

So simple and sweet from inbeccascloset

There are so many more that I LOVE!! My favorite though is one that my mom has that I remember using growing up. I remember everyday adding more "straw" to the manager so Baby Jesus would have a soft bed come Christmas morning when he would be added. My kids also love that one.

Day 16 of 25 Handmade Gifts to Give

Sorry for the lack of post yesterday...busy day and then crazy computer issues last night. Computer seems to be fine now after some major cleaning up. It was in bad shape, taking 20 minutes to type one word. I'm not a patient person as it is, so I was really not a happy girl last night.

Today's gift(home decor item) is stockings. Stockings come in all shapes, sizes and designs, but are one of the staples at the Holidays. I LOVE going through my stocking come Christmas morning. I even had 3 stockings as a little girl. One was the traditional red with white trim and my name embroidered on it, another that was made by my grandma, it was a pink ballet shoe and the final looked like a doll with a dress and apron on and the apron was the stocking.

Etsy is full of cute handmade stockings.

One of my favorites comes from Mr. Button
Should have known there was an owl on one of my favorites.

Another favorite from Little B Nursery

I love the simplicity of this stocking from Mondernality

Are you a stocking stuffer lover like me? What is the best thing you ever got in your stocking?

Day 15 of 25 Handmade Gifts to Give

As I was trying to decide what I wanted to feature as my gift today I decided that instead of a "gift" idea, I'm doing "decor" ideas for this week. They will all be Holiday themed. Today is one of my favorite Holiday decorations...Advent Calendars. I tried finding one on etsy to feature and came up with a list 20 miles long. I LOVE Advent Calendars or some sort of something to help count the days down to Christmas. I do have some of my favorites to show you though, but I encourage you to go to Etsy and search for Advent Calendars.

Found in Polka Stripe Studio This is a semi-local to me artist, she's from the Kansas City area, which is 2 hours from me.
Found in Bottle Cap Jen. She has lots of different kinds of Bottle Cap Jewelry, more great ideas.

This idea is great for DIYers. These come to you from Shabby Chic Crafts. She has several different types of things for Advent DIYers.

I have several different Advent Calendars I want to make. We have 2 that were mine when I was a little girl and I'm so excited that my kids enjoy them as well.

Make it Monday and more

Make it Monday this week includes:
lots of cards
a few banners
some sewing(no clue what I just want to sew some more)
advent calendars
whatever else I decide I want to make

I did pretty good over the weekend made a mini book for a friend's baby shower, made a pillowcase for a little boy to have at day care, and a couple of banners. Will be posting pictures of all of them on my Pink Owl Blog, but I will let you know when I do get them posted. Need to take pictures still of a couple of things.

Can't believe it's the last full week before Thanksgiving. Getting excited about all the food though. I have been watching the Black Friday ads and am slowly getting my lists made for my kids. I have decided that the adults in the family are getting handmade gifts. I need to fill out the Handmade Pledge. I remember being a kid and hating handmade gifts though, now I so appreciate them. Even my kiddos will get a few handmade things, but of course their main gifts will be store bought. Until I figure out how to make my own Madden game that is...

Let me know what you are working on this week. Always looking for new projects to add to my want to make file.

Day 14 of 25 Handmade Gifts to Give

Sorry I didn't get this posted yesterday. I spent the morning putting together a mini-book for a friends baby shower that was yesterday afternoon. I didn't even turn my computer on until about 10:30 last night. Today's idea is full of one of my favorite things....owls!!! Seriously the lady has tons of different owls in her shop. I Sew Lucky is the name of the shop. Lots of cute little owls for little ones on your gift giving list.

My favorite is this little guy:
Back later with today's gift idea.

Day 13 of 25 Handmade Gifts to Give

My paper crafting obsession started with scrapbooking and it's been a while since I've done an actual scrapbook page. I've been thinking a lot about mini books lately and making them for various events. I came across this shop on Etsy and my eye was immediately on the mini books she has. The shop is the Spunky Spider She has several cute Holiday items.

How cute is this!! You have to check this out because it does not open like your traditional mini book. Would be so cute for babies first Christmas or snow done up as a brag book for grandma. Talk about a great Christmas gift!

Missing Angels(long and sad post)

I had great plans to do more blogging this week, but I've been dealing with some personal stuff and just haven't been in a happy blogging mood. I am in that state I always end up during this time of year. Happy that the Holidays are here, but seriously missing 3 very important people in my life.

My daddy, who died when I was 9. I will always remember the day he passed away. I remember waking up and my aunt being there and telling me that my grandma was coming to town that day because my dad wasn't doing good. He was diabetic and had been since he was a child. I went to school and came home and no sign of my mom. She later came home and told me the news. The next few days were a blur. I still went to school, was aiming for perfect attendance. I'm pretty sure I've told this story here before, so if I have, sorry for repeating it.

My grandma who died in 2006. My dad's mom. She lost her husband, my grandpa in 1976. She lost her son, my dad in 1986. Holy cow it just hit me that it was less than 10 years between the 2. I so wish I could sit down and talk to her one more time. So many question I would love to ask her that I never did. The only reason I can think of for never asking her was fear. Why should I have been afraid of asking my grandma questions like "how did you move on after my dad died?" I would love to know how she did and maybe she never really did, she just learned to cope. That is one thing we have in common that I'm sure both of us would give anything to not have in common, having to bury a child. So many nights I have wanted to pick up the phone to call her and talk like we used to. I need to be able to talk to her again. I had plans to call her the night before she died and never did, I will regret that for the rest of my life. Lesson learned at the same time. Also if you love someone TELL THEM! Right now, not later, Right now. Even if you have to send it in a text or an email, let them know. There is no reason not to say "I Love You!" None whatsoever!!!

And last, my angel, my Dakota. I miss her crazy back bends that she would do that drove her papa crazy. I miss how when she would giggle her giggle it always looked like it started in her toes. She would curl her toes up and scrunch up her little legs and then just giggle. I miss that. She used to giggle the loudest when her brother would get in trouble. I wonder if she would have thought it was funny when Audrey gets in trouble? She'd have plenty to giggle about if she would have. I miss her incredible eyes. Those eyes that were as big as she was. And the eyelashes that went with them. CRAZY long!! So long that when her eyes were closed her lashes almost curled around enough to touch her eyelids. Her hair, so thick and full. Most of all, just her, I miss her like crazy. I would give anything to hold her one more time. I will never forget as long as I can remember things the night she passed away. I remember getting her ready for bed after her last feeding and thinking something wasn't right. I went in and woke Mark up and told him I was taking her to the hospital. I remember walking out of the house carrying her in her car seat and the drive to the hospital and feeling like I was never going to get there. I remember calling my mom and telling her I was taking her to the hospital. I called my grandparents, I called my aunt Shanon, and I called my grandma. I remember telling all of them to pray hard. I remember feeling so alone. I remember walking into the ER and telling the guy sitting at the desk that my baby was having trouble breathing. I remember him grabbing her car seat and running down the hall screaming "baby code, baby code." I remember handing a nurse my notebook full of all the information I had about Dakota and all her issues. I remember standing there for a while watching them work on her. Finally a nurse came and told me I should probably wait in the waiting room. I remember sitting there all alone. Seriously no one else was in there but me. Talk about time stopping. It SUCKED and still does. I remember a nurse finally coming down and telling me that they have done all they can and they will continue to keep trying if I want them too. I knew she was gone. I walked with the nurse back down to the room they had her in. I remember the doctor, a man old enough to be my grandpa turning to me with tears in his eyes telling me they didn't think there was anything more they could do for her, but that they would keep trying if I thought they should. I knew she was gone. I remember them removing all the wires and handing her to me. The last time I would ever get to hold my Kota. I remember them bringing me a phone so I could make phone calls. I called Mark and told him. I called my mom and told her she was gone. I remember her saying "I thought it would be a case of just needing some oxygen and she'd be fine." I remember calling my grandparents and my grandpa answering the phone and telling him that Dakota had died. I called my grandma in Seattle and told her she was gone. I think I called my aunt Shanon and told her. Those kind of phone calls suck to make. I hope none of you ever have to make a phone call like that. I remember Mark and D'Artanyan coming up to the hospital. Talk about something that hurts to do, try telling a 3 year old little boy that worships his baby sister that she has died. How do you tell a 3 year old what death is when you aren't even sure of it yourself? I remember him saying "the doctors will take the stuff of her and we can take her home." Oh sweet little boy how I wish that were true. I remember signing a lot of forms and finally making that long drive home by myself. I had a car seat in my car that was now empty. I walked in the house and knew I wasn't going to sleep. My mom and step-dad were on their way to Columbia. I remember talking to the organ donor center on the phone. I remember making a lot of decisions that no parent should ever have to make. I remember all of this like it was yesterday. I remember her service and D'Artanyan saying "Hey he said Dakota's name." "Hey, he said my name." I remember the songs we had played. I still break down when I hear those songs. There is one song that wasn't around at the time, that had it been we would have had it played. It's "Angel" by Beverley Mitchell. If you haven't heard this song, look it up. She played Lucy on 7th Heaven and sang it in an episode. Whenever I miss Dakota extra I play this song. Yes it makes me cry like crazy, but I love it.

One of my favorite pictures of her. Check out those big baby blues and the eyelashes that go with them.

If you made it through all of that, thank you and I'm sorry. I feel a little better for getting it all out. I hope to be back Saturday with something I had plans to do on Friday. Also an update on my Make it Monday list.

Day 12 of 25 Handmade Gifts to Give

Today's gift idea is something I LOVE making....garland or banners. So many different things you can do with them. Today's shop I came across while searching for a bit of inspiration. Simple Whimsey has some gorgeous banners. Love the different shapes for the flags too.

Love the fabric in this one.
